One of our main areas of sustainability is waste and recycling. Here you can read more about what this entails, what is being done today and what goals we have set ourselves.

What?

Waste management and recycling are essential to reduce emissions and to be considered a responsible and sustainable destination. It is an area that is very visible among visitors and in the daily operations, and can have a lot to say for the overall experience of the destination, especially at a destination with a high volume of guests like Trysil has.

According to the sustainability report for 2021, waste management and source sorting have been one of Trysil's main challenges. Nevertheless, good cooperation between the municipality, the waste management company SØIR and the operators of the cabin areas in Trysil has led to several measures being implemented. Recycling in the cabin areas is one of these measures.

What is being done today?

  • Several businesses in Trysil within waste management and recycling
  • Recycling station and recycling market
  • Tourists and locals have become better at sorting food waste. Incorrect disposing of food in residual waste has been reduced by 9 per cent from 2016
  • The waste company SØIR together with Trysil municipality, Trysilfjell Utmarkslag and Fageråsen Fritid have introduced recycling stations in the city center and in the large cabin areas around Trysilfjellet.
  • The Lodge and Trysiltunet apartments have installed recycling stations to improve guests recycling their waste.
  • Trysil municipality has introduced recycling stations in and around the municipal hall.
  • Waste bins around the entire Trysilfjellet and in the city center are divided in four departments, depending on type of waste.

Goals towards 2030:

  • Reduce the proportion of food waste at the restaurants and maintain the high rate of recycling amongst all businesses.
  • Digitalize information and reduce/remove printed matter.
  • More recycling stations in the cabin areas.

Why?

Awareness of waste and recycling has increased over the past 15 years, and people want to contribute by sorting waste and reusing clothes and equipment. Nevertheless, this is something Norwegians prioritize down when they go on holiday.

Green Dot Norway has asked Norwegians what happens to waste sorting when they travel away at Easter, and the answer is discouraging. As many as 61 percent of those who plan to go away say they are a little or much worse at sorting waste when they are not at home (2021). Thus, it is important that Trysil facilitates environmental stations with good recycling facilities.

Trysil is responsible for raising awareness of locals and visitors when it comes to waste sorting and making them more responsible consumers. Responsible consumers use and throw away less. This reduces the overall environmental impact from production, transport, use and waste management. This is especially important for volume destinations such as Trysil.
